(FEOM Or/ft OWtf CORRESPONDENTS.) Christchurch, Jan. 19 Mr Wakefield has been returned for Christchnrch East, by a majority of 14. The numbers were Wakefield, 169 ; Duncan, 354. Dunedin, Jan. 19. The General Government has commenced a prosecution against Mr Barton, editor of the Daily Times, for libel, in reference to the Telegraph Department. The case was called on at the Resident Magistrate's Court, and adjourned for a week. Mr Haggitt appeared for the Government and Mr Macassey for defendant. The poll for Christchurch West took place to-day. Richardson, 234 ; Williams, 214. Majority for Richardson, 20. Auckland via Thames, Jan. 20. Mr Hall took to San Francisco a signed contract for seven years with the A.S.N. Company. The service is to be alternate with the Suez service, and is to commence on the expiration of the present contract. He is backed by Victoria, Sydney, and Queensland, the object being to get an American subsidy. The permissive clauses in the Licensing Bill passed the Provincial Council without a division. The required majority to enforce these clauses consists of twothirds of the adults, including females. Arrived— James Paterson, from Sydney. She is laid on to leave Auckland for Fiji on the 7th February, or after the arrival of the Airedale from the South. Napier, Jan. 20. M'Lean was elected yesterday a member of the House of Representatives. Ll5O was subscribed to-day for the purpose of sinking a public artesian well in Napier. Timaru, Jan. 20. Mr. Stafford was re-elected to-day without opposition,
