His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, and Governor Bowen arrived at Tsiuranga in the Luna last night. They intend visiting Rotorua, Lake Tanpo, and also the hot springs. Napier, December 14, A public meeting was held here; ljist evening, and unanimously passed j a memorial to the following effect — 1. Expressing satisfaction at the mail contract via San Francisco. 2. Pointing out that, although the mail steamers will pass within: sight, of, Napier, they will not call. 3.' That f calling ; would not involve; a greater delay than two * hours. That Napier is the centre of the East Coasfi district, and service* emanate ftpm Napier] to the interior of the Nojrth Island.. 4. That a steam launch has bben ordered specially for tendering steamers. 5. And the memorialists pray that Napier may be made a port of call. i .. ' Dunedin, Dec. li. Mr Yogel spoke last night in compliaince with a requisition. DuNEDiN,|Dec. 15. The Piostmaster-General had an interview to-day, with the Chamber of Com-: merce. After a long conversation, the following resolutions were carried :-r---"That, having heard from the PastmasterGflueral :full particulars of the; contract made between the New Zealand Government and the Pacific Transportation' Company, as to T the monthly steam service between San Francisco and New Zealand, the Chamber is of opinion that such service will confer great benefits upon the Colony, by affording reliable and speedy mail communication with America, -xv i- u^vs™. ~.,an«Hp.,3 to the cordial support of , this Chamber," ; „_- " That, considering the amount of the subsidy given; to the San Frariciscd line, in the opinion of the meeting it is inexpedient, to subsidise any steamer for- the conveyance of mails between Melbourne and New -Zealand,, i beypnd the , usual postal allowance. The^ Chamber is also of opinion that seeing the present line," owned by M^Meckan, Blackwood^.and Co., is largely supported by the public- Pf "New Zealand, it is their interest to secure further support by affording additional po.stal facilities by running their line; in direct communication with the Suez steamers."
