THE WEIGHT OF COAL.

[TO THE EDITOR.] Sic, — As the authorities at the' Brunner •Coal Mine have been making themselves notorious of late, inconsequence of complaints made by myself and others on th,e question of the weight given at the mine, I consider it is only ju3t to the public, who are virtually the sufferera in the long run, to make known the result of the agitation/ 1 Today, by the orders of the manager, I had the coal weighed into one of the boats basket by basket. Mr Dartnell, the clerk, and. two miners attended Vat the/scalea,: to see, I suppose, that what is vulgarly called the "turn of the scale" was not given. In fact, the coal was weighed as carefully as if it had been gold. The barge was . one in which we have brought away 22 tons, and . of late. 21 tons ; but to-day, when the coal was weighed, the boat, by some inexplicable means, proved hdrself unable to carry more than 20 tons,-arid at that, deeper in the water than we have worked her for some time. . ( This fact shews moat undoubtedly that the weight which I have invariably protested against is no longer a chimera, but a reality ; and ! I earnestly hope the Nelson Government ' ; ! will no longer' attempt to glous over the fault they, have now found themselves to | be guiltyof, lviz.^selßng.2o tons of coal as 21,iand taking the cash for the odd ton they don't supply. - ... : ' , : laai, -fidy..... ' ■ James WiLKiß.'.' : Cobden, December 14, 1870. ? C1
