Constable Flauagan stated that early on the Jl ßth instant he went to the house of the defendant at 20 minutes jast 12 o'clock, and saw four men and two women there. A search was made, but no liquor was found. A witness stated that he went to bhe house to see a man named Jones, and while there was asked to take a glass of brandy. No money passed ; the liquor was purchased by Joups at the Victoria Hotel, and supplied .to tho witness* in a friendly manner. Another man who was present s lid that he was asked to take a drink, bub he refused, as he did not think it would do him any good. Tho defence was that the men wero old mates with Jones, and they were quietly having a talk in tho house when the police entered ; no money passed, and no liquor was found, it was a mere friendly visit of one old mute to tho house of another. He was very h:u\l pressed by Mr Hickson and the Magistrate, but would give no delinite answer, because he had been drinking about town all day, and whenever lie felt himself getting drunk he took to soda-water or cordials. He paid 2s 6\l to a female he supposed was Mrs Godfrey. He never jiaw/the defendant until that morning. Another* witness was in the same oblivious state as to the particular kind of liquor he had in the defendant's house on the occasion, although he denied being either drunk or sober. The next two witnesses stated that they had nothing but lemonade to drink in the house. Constable Flaimagan stated that the house was searched, but only cordiala were found— no spirituous ,or fermented liquors. We cannot afford space for the whole of the article ; indeed we think there is no necessity, as the following brief extract contains the whole gist of it, and is sufficiently explanatory to satisfy the majority of our readers :—" The newly consecrated Bishop of Wellington and the Primate have, after careful deliberation, pronounced the formal complaint preferred against Mr Nicholls too flimsy and trifling to merit ssrious investigation by a tribunal."
