The New sTork Beethoran Festival has proved a notable failuie, involving it is s.aid a loss of 40,000 dollars. Despatches havo been sent out to the Indian Government informing Lord Mayo that arrangements have now been completed for supplying all the troops in India, native as well as British, with Snider rifles ; also for the equipment of twenty-six batteries of horse and foot artillery in readiuessfor service. Professor Allman is about to resign the chair of natural history in the University of Edinburgh on account.of illhealth. He has held the chair since.lßss. It is said that Sir Roderick Mnrchison has resolved to give L6OOO towards the endowment of a chair of geology and raineragology in the university, if the Government show equal liberality in the matter.
