[from our own correspondents.] Westport, Nov. 3. The Superintendent had a large meeting last night. He was sererely cate- I chised, and resolutions condemnatory of his past management of the Gold Fields were carried. Auckland via Wanganui, Nov. 3. The Provincial Council was opened on Wednesday. The Superintendent's address vraa antagonistic to the General Government. . Next morning the Government replied in a three-column leader in the Southern Cross. The Herald commends the Government, and blames the Superintedent. In discussing the address in reply, several members expressed opinions differing from the Superintendent. The Bank of New Zealand's halfyearly meeting took place on Wednesday, when a dividend was declared of ten per cent, and a bonus of five shillings per share. All the new allotted shares have been taken up. Eighty naked, unarmed, Hau-haus from Tokiaogamntu, headed by the King's Secretary, visited Buckland's run. This is considered a sign of peaceful intentions. They proceeded on to Totnahoeru. A deputation has waited upon Mr Yogel about the Gold Fields' Water Supply. He promised that the Government would take steps a,s soon as the loan was settled. Mr Haddock, solicitor, Dunedin, has been, arrested on a charge of appropriating to his own use L 395. The warrant arrived yesterday. The prisoner will be forwarded to Dunedin by the Taranaki. A movement is on foot for forming a Protective League. A requisition to Mr Gillies to stand for the City West wa3 signed by 20 J voters. He consented to stand. Swanson is up for Newton, Thomas Henderson for Waitemata, Creighton for Eden, Buckland for Franklin, and Sam for the Thames. The Government contemplate prosecuting the Union Bank for shipping gold from the Thames to Auckland since the proclamation was issued. Mr Yogel addresses the electors of the City East to-night. On the question of the settlement of Busby's Laud Claim, the Council had a warm debate. The Government resisted a motion for adjournment, which was lost by one. On a second motion for adjournment, the Government consented. A vote of censure is expected to be proposed. The Native Lands Court has decided for Te Hira in the Waihi case. Mr Yogel has visited the Thames, and was waited upon by deputations respecting water supply, cutting tracks, volunteer matters, and the telegraph.. Subsequently Mr Yogel addressed the public in the Theatre and was loudly cheered. Mr Swan attempted to get up an opposition and was hissed down. The Superintendent presented a petition to the Governor this morning respecting miners' rights. The Governor has promised to consider the question. Commercial. — Mr Binney reports barley unsaleable ; oats 3s 4d to 3s 6d ; wheat firm (good sample) 6s to 6s 3d ; flour Ll3 to Ll4 10s ; cheese 8d ; bacon 8d ; potatoes 5s lOd. Shipping. — Arrivals — October 22nd, Strathnavar, from Lyttelton ; 29th, Banshee, from Lyttelton ; Asterope, from London, in 100 days ; Oct. 31st, Southern Cross, missionary schooner. Sailed— Constance, for Sydney. The Taranaki and Storm Bird leave to-day for the South. Napier, Nov. 4. The races came off satisfactorily on the 2nd. Mr Palmer, late mate of the Luna, whilst riding along the course, game into contact with Mr O'Connell, who was riding in the opposite direction, Mr O'Connell's horse was killed, and Palmer's head was muoh bruised. Both men were picked up insensible, but are now getting on satisfactorily. Mr Hamlin has arranged the telegraph dispute with th& natives at Kotnra. They are to make good the posts destroyed. Mesrss Locke and Bold returned from Kotorua and report an excellent road connecting Taupo with the Bay of Plenty. A Chatham Island prisoner, named Tohin, surrendered himself at Orakeikorakie. The Armed Constabulary are to be engaged road making near their respective posts.
