Auckiand via Wanganvi, Aug. 31. The Lord Ashley has arrived. The Harman, now overdue from Canterbury, has not ai'rived. The Maori chiefs, whom the Southland bailiffs endeavored to arrest for debt, are still at large, supported by all their people, \ among whom there is great excitement. It is feared this Tapari's insolvency will strengthen Te Hint's party in opposing the opening of Ohinemnri, and the Land Court is now sitting there. Wellington, Sept. 2. The farewell ball given to the Commodore last night was a great success. The Governor took the chair at supper. The Duke of Edinburgh was present. Christchurch, Sept. 1. A smart shock of earthquake was felt here last night at 6.25 p.m. The direction was west to east, the undulating movement lasting about twenty seconds. No serious damage was done hero, but iv Lyttelton a number of chimneys were shaken down. The shock was very severe there, and was also felt in Kaiapoi. Dunedin, Sept. 1. A slight shock of earthquake was felt | here yesterday about 6.25 p.m. No [ damage was done. Hokitika, Sept. 2. The census returns for Westland are all in. They give the population at over 15,000. It was very inaccurately taken. Many persons in Hokitika are known to be omitted from the returns, •while refusals to fill,, or sign papers in country are alleged to be numerous. Nelson, Sept. 2. Mr Harris, late Sub-Treasurer and Accountant on the West Coast Gold Fields, was brought up to-day charged with the embezzlement of L 1231, and was remanded for a week. There is no security. It is supposed that the defalcations have been going on for years, but were not known. The Colonist reports that a good gold field has been discovered near the Karamea Bend, on this side of the Ranges. A miner, named O'Brien, got 40oz of gold in five weeks. He describes the country as rich, but at present the snow lies heavy on it. '
