A smart shock of earthquake was felt here last night at 6.25 p.m. The direction was west to east, the undulating movement lasting about twenty seconds. No serious damage was done hero, but iv Lyttelton a number of chimneys were shaken down. The shock was very severe there, and was also felt in Kaiapoi. Dunedin, Sept. 1. A slight shock of earthquake was felt | here yesterday about 6.25 p.m. No [ damage was done. Hokitika, Sept. 2. The census returns for Westland are all in. They give the population at over 15,000. The Colonist reports that a good gold field has been discovered near the Karamea Bend, on this side of the Ranges. A miner, named O'Brien, got 40oz of gold in five weeks. He describes the country as rich, but at present the snow lies heavy on it. '
