Mr Co'wper recently took the opportunity, when writing to the Inspector of Police with regard to the capture of Thundei'bolt, to give a summary of the operations under, the Police Act with respect to the capture of bushrangers. This summary shows that since 1862 "nine of these marauders have been executed, twelve shot deftd, one killed, one mortally wounded, and four are now undergoing the penalty of imprisonment under long sentences. In dealing with these twentyseven criminals the lives of nine constables have been sacrificed, or at the rate of one constable for every three ruffians) and this is exclusive of men who have met their deaths by night exposure to the weather while hunting the robbers down. Two of the bushrangei % 3 were shot by private gentlemen, and to acknowledge their courage the Government has directed that a gold medal shall bo struck, and presented to Messrs Campbell and Keightley. In addition to the cf>nstable3 who have met death in the execution of their duty, 18 others have been more or less severely wounded, so that the .bushrangers have made considerable havoc with the force. Mr Cowper expresses his high appreciation of the zeal of the police officers, although he admits that when the country was distracted and enraged ] at the impunity of the robbers, he did at i times feel doubts. He expresses his hope, | however, that now that the last of tho known bushrangers is disposed of we shall see no revival of this brigandage.
