The important position which Greymouth is assuming among the ports of the polony may be gathered from a return which is published in a recent General Government G-azdte,, showing the quantity of gold exported from the various ports during the quarter ended the 30th J une last. It "will thus be seen that Greymonth stands in the proud position of being the second exporter in the Colony, treading very closely upon the heels of Dunedin itself, which exports the whole of the gold found in the large Province of Otago, while this port is only credited with the produce of the Grey Valley, about which so little is known in the other parts of the country. As to the Gold' Fields of the Province of Auckland, about which so much is heard, it will.be seen that the port of Greymouth exceeds ifs gbjd export liy..2oooozs o:i the quarter, while that of the two ports of Wesll|)?s— Greytnouth and Hokitika — fliore than doubled it. The':following are the returns we have referred to : — Dnnedin, 28,841oz ; Greymoiitb., 25,3170z : Hokitika, 23,5950z; : Auckland, 23,3340z ; Westport, 15,3580z ; Nelson, 33220z ; Okarito, 1917oz ; Picton, 7890z : Invercargill, 4210z ; Wellington, 30oz.
