As we anticipated in our recent revision of the new mining rules for Westland, a very large amount of dissatisfaction has been expressed with regard to them by the members of the mining community upon whom the additional burdens imposed by them fall very heavily. There is no question, that in order to secure the reworking of enormous tracks oif land on our beaches in . Wes^land, which were only scraped over during the first rush, very liberal regulations in the shape of extended. ; claims and leases should be given, but it appears that the very opposite coiirse has been adopted, and that in framing the new rules the areas-of; the extended I 'claims and leases : have been reduced, and the number of men for each acre . much increased as most effectually to put a stop to all profitable working of future leases on these beaches. assuring them that already Mr Harrison has been put in possession of the facts and has promised to use every means in his power to obtain the suspension of these rules, so far as the Grey District is concerned until Annexation to Nelson is an accomplished fact.
