The annual election of members of the Borough Council in room of the retiring members takes place early next month, aud it is about time the ratepayers were "casting about" for worthy representatives. The Councillors who retire in September are Messrs Moore, f arkinson, arid Kilgour. At the meeting of the Borough Council last evening, Messrs Strike, Purcell, and "Michol were appointed Returning Officers for the elections in the different Wards. The report of the cases in the Warden's and Magistrate's Courts at Ahaura, Napbleou, &c, which we give to-day, ought to have appeared a week ago, but the person to whom our up-country reporter entrusted his despatch failed to deliver it at this office, and we were compelled to wait until the reports -were re-written. " • The troupe of Christy Minstrela/nmV in Hokitika, was expected here on Saturday, but we have reason to believe that their engagements will delay their arrival for a few days longer. Last night the Borough Council resolved to ask the Bank of New Zealand for an overdraft of L6OO to meet bills falling due on the 27th of this month. « The B.s. Airedale, with the English mail, via San Francisco, arrived at; Nelson on Tuesday night. The news brought by her was promptly telegraphed to us yesterday by our own correspondent, and published as t an "extra." She. does not bring later dajes than the Suez mail, but the items are additional to those already published, aud will be read with much interest. : On the recommendation of the Harbor Master, the Town Clerk was last evening instructed by the Borough Council, to obtain a number of life-buoys and ropes to be fixed on .the wharf, to be in readiness for saving life in cases of .necessity. A man named John Holmes, who Recently . returned to Auckland from San Francisco by the s.s. Woriga Wonga, has been found drowned in Auckland Harbor. He liad met with severe losses in California but, . still, suicide was not suspected. He leaves a wife and two children. ; At the Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, the following civil cases were disposed of :— A. R. Guinness v. A. S. Dreyer, Nelson. Claim of L 25 19s. The sameprispner, for makitog use of 6bscerie language in a'public place, was fined Ll or 48 hours' imprisonment. Inspector Shalcrass, of the Nelson Police Force, arrived at the Ahaura on Monday last on a visit of inspection throughout the district. He visited Napoleon on Tuesday. Itis said that Mr Sbalcrass intends making ini-' portant alterations., and that a general; and complete change in the -future ' stations of the officers and men is about to be made. The district will lose many worthy men, who, from long association, have become in a manner part and parcel of it; and.no doubt, they will not be allowed to depart to the new scenesof their duties, -without a recognition of their past services j '.on the part 4>f the inhabitants. The adjourned special meeting of the" Borough Council -was held in the Town Hall last evening. ; All the members were present with the exception of Councillor Strike. The minutes of the last meeting having been read, . the Mayor pointed out that there was nothing stated in the minutes showing why he wished the minutes of the previous meeting to be again confirmed. It would be as well to- show what his objection was. A short conversation took place, during which the Mayor asked • that the opinion of the solicitor should be taken as to the course he (the Mayor) had recently adopted with regard to these minutes ; but this was objected to by several members. Ultimately, the minutes of Monday night's meeting were
confirmed. The ordinary meeting was then adjourned until the special meeting adjourned to that evening had been held. The business of the special meeting was to consider a letter received from J-. Kilgour and Co. (already published), with, respoct to the lease of the Coal and Railway Reserve. Mr Moore moved, without remark, "That this Council fully endorses the action of the Councillors at the interim meetings lately held, for the purpose of protesting against the lease of any portion of the Railway, Coal, or other reserves until the question of Annexation to Nelson is settlfcd, and that the [ miuvtes of said interim meetings stand as a ; record of the proceeding in the minute book of the Council." Mr Wickes seconder! the I, motion, which was carried without discussion. The business of the ordinary meeting was then proceeded with, but it was of a •most uninterestinc! description. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Grey River Hospital Committee was held at Gilraer's Hotel last evening. Present— t Kenrick (chair), Gilmev, Winter, iArnott, Masters, Moss, Greenwood, Revell, King, aud Maclean. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and adopted. The following correspondence was read :— - From the Red Jack's Benevolent Society, asking that their sick members be admitted (subject to the doctor's approval) at a stated sumper annum — agreed to, the price to be Is per month per member. A discussion ensued regarding the finances,, and it waß' agreed that the town be canvassed for the annual subscriptions to the Hospital, and the following gentlemen were appointed : — Upper Ward : Messrs Greenwood, Moss, and Maclean. , Middle Ward : Messrs Kennedy, Gilmer, and Maxwell. Lower Ward : Messrs Wickes, Strike, and Moore. Cdbdeit and North Beach: Mr Whitefoord. South Beach : Mr Masters, and Mr Duncan M 'Lean. We believe there is very little, occasion for us to impress upon all the necessity of immediately attending to the wants of the, Hospital. Our community has always come forward when called upon to ably assist this noble charity, and now when the timeior the annual appeal is made, we are confident that it will meet with a hearty and ready response. As usual, the Westland Government subsidies are vary mudi in arrear, and an application, willliave to be made to Wellington for immediate payment (as the . Chairman is at present there) as it is quite impossible that Jin expensive institution of this kind can be carried on without prompt payments from all quarters.
