THE MUNNA COPPER MINE
[MARYBOROUGH CHRONICLE.] For some time past extensive mining operations have been carried on with the object of testing a reported discovery of copper ore near Munna Creek, on the Glenbar Bun. The result so far has been highly satisfactory, and justifies the 'most sanguine expectations on the part of the proprietors. The discovery of the lode is due entirely to an accidental circumstance. . A tree standing exactly on the Hne of outcrop, was blown down, disclosing the metalliferous rock beneath, and leading to further investigation. The testoperationshave hitherto been confined tosiuking a shaft on the side of, and driving on the lode. The drive is already extended four feet into the lode, without reaching the opposite wall. The ore is of the variety known as sulphide ; of copper (viterons copper ore) averaging, on the very lowest estimate 25 per cent, of copper ; and as the vein, is estimated to be not less than eight feet in thickness, the quality of the ore is practically unlimited. A most favorable presage for the valae of the mine is the circumstance that the walls of the lode are entirely dissimilar to and distinct from itself, sharply de6nirig its boundary against the bearing matrix. The distance of the mine from Maryborough by land is 47 miles, and the ore can b 9 brought to navigable water in 24 miles. We have so often been on the verge of becoming a great copper-shipping emporium, and the seat of other industries dependent, on such undertakings, that we have hitherto' hesitated to speak with much confidence on the subject of the Munua Miue, until it appeared to us to have become an established fact. From the specimens ive , have seen, and the details furnished to us by the proprietors, vre have no doubt ; as to the value of the new discovery, and we trust that its development will soon add another to, the numerous sources of prosperity already tapped in Central Queensland. The mine is tbe property of five individuals, of whom Messrs Steward and Gladwell are the Maryborough representatives. These gentlemen are taking an onerous part in the development of its wealth. .' i■'
