COUNTY COUNCIL.

[w. C. TIMES.]

The County Council met at twelve o'clock on Wednesday, when there were present— The Chairman of the Council, Messrs Carreras, White, Robinson, and Clarke. The minutes of the previous meeting were read aud confirmed ; after which Mr John White asked leave to put a motion, without notice, in reference to the endorsement by the Council cf the action taken at the public meeting on the pi-pceeding evening, in the Hokitika Town Hall. Leave was given, but after some discussion it was thought better that notice should be given, and the following was then tabled by Mr White,. aud will be dealt with next night—" That this Council regards the financial scheme propounded by the Colonial Treasurer as injurious to the welfare of the Colony, and grievously unjust to the County of Weslland." On the motion of Mr Carreras, Messrs White and Robinson were added to the Public Works Committee. The Chairman brought up the Reserve Committee's report, having reference to the request of the Cricket and Jockey Clubs for a site for their respective uses. The report recommended that permission be given for them to occupy a portion of the Park Reserve, and it was received and adopted. , Mr White asked when the tenders for the repairs to the Christchurch and Lamplough roads would be opened. They were sent in before the 20th of last month. The Chairman replied that they had already been opened, but the lowest was twice the cost estimated, and the County Engineer did not recommend the adoption of any. The deposits accompanying the tenders could be obtainedat any time, if tenderers would call at the office. Mr White then inquired whether anything was likely to ; be done this session in reference to a bridge across the Hokitika river. He had seen plans that had been drawn up which he understood the County Engineer, and others competent to judge, had highly approved of. He also understood that there were parties prepared to enter into the speculation, if terms could be arranged. The Chairman said that he could hardly be expected to answer the question, but he would say that he was aware a company had been formed for the purpose, and that an application would be made to the Council in reference to the erection of the bridge. In reply to a question by Mr White, respecting the construction of a bridge over the Atahurai the Chairman said offers had been received for the, work, and would be laid before the Council at their next sitting. At the County Council, on Thursday night, there was not a quorum, and the meeting was adjourned until to-day, at noon. The members present were— The Chairman, Messrs Robinson and Garreras. The Chairman gave notice to move on Tuesday^ 22nd inst.,: > " That the Council resolve itself-into committee for the consideration of the Estimates."
