THE EDUCATION BILL.

[to the editor.] Sißj— lt is no new thing to find our worthy representatives, in Council assem-. . bled, neglecting their duty ; but they certainly out-Heroded Herod recently; when delegating their legislative powers to a committee of Hokitika citizens. A subject of .greater importance than tha^ of Education it would be difficult to name, or one of greater general interest to thebody of the people ; and yet we find ourselves committed to an Education Bill,, framed on what ?— the unanimous voice of the representatives of Westland, given after serious consideration of the subject. Oh, no ! but siniply on what the West Coast Times, in its report, calls "Archdeacon Harper's resolutions !" If it were requisite to submit the proposed Bill to the criticism of the people merely, that object could not be' attained by calling a public meeting in Hokitika,; therefore, as one very deeply interested in the cause of Education, I beg to cuter a protest against both the proposed Bill and the manner in which it has been framed. . . , . I see that the Waste Lands Bjttl is also to be submilted to thp people of Hykitjka for their consideration (vide W&t (Joast Tvines, 15th instantV The County system, elastic as it is, will not bear this.- novel mode of legislation much longer. } Trusting you will notice these matters, I am, &c, . A; Ratepayer.
