GYMPIE.
[qympib times.] May 14. We understand from a gentleman just returned from the new rush that there are between 30 and 40 shanties on the lmbil diggings. There was very little work done on Tuesday, and on Wednesday everything was at a complete standstill in consequence of the rain. The quartz claims had been already taken up. It was reported that from two or three claims on the Creek from au ounce and a half to two ounces had been the result of Monday's work. Provisions appear to be plentiful and cheap, and the population very orderly. Mr N,. W. Brown brought in some pieces of flatfish gold a little over an ounce in weight, which he has caused to be assayed ; it is found to be worth one shilling per ounce more than the ordinary Gympiegold. The prospects of the Smithfield pospect claim continue to be of a highly encouraging nature. We ore informed that during the present week stone has been raised which far surpasses in richness any that has yet been got in the claim, and is equal in richness to any stone yet found on this famous line. A dishful of specimens brought to the surface during the early part of the week was estimated to contain lOOoz of the precious metal. The reef is 14ft wide at a depth of a 100 ft, and h easily worked. The party in Nos. 6 and 7 south, Smithfield, have struck the reef in their new shaft at a depth of 60ft, and obtained splendid prospects.
