ANNEXATION

[to the editor.] Sir, — I fully endorse the sentiments expressed in your last issue, viz., that the extension of the boundary line of the Province of Nelson to the Teremakau, and thereby placing the whole of the Grey Valley under one Government, would be a great improvement on the present system of government. And I think, from the present Government's Provincial proclivities, that a petition, judiciously got up and numerously signed, would receive its serious consideration, and, perhaps, sanction. But would such an achievement secure the administration of justice to the Grey Valley District ? Does not the past conduct of the Nelson Government answer the above question in the negative 1 And, as far as I can judge, there is too much of the City of Nelson in the Provincial Government to hope for much improvement. Are not the days of Provincialism numbered 1 Will not the forthcoming general election, with its subsequent Government, seal its doom, and substitute Road Boards and Municipalities 1 Such a change would, I think, be just what the Grey Valley requires, to render it one of the most prosperous districts in the colony. I, therefore, cannot fee! very enthusiastic over the scheme of extending the boundary line of the Nelson Province to the Teremakau ; but would very much prefer seeing the subject of Centralism, with Road Boards, &c, fully discussed, and thereby properly ventilated, that the inhabitants of the district may be prepared to take decisive action at the forthcoming general election. — Yours, &c, Observes. Greymouth, June 6, 1870.
