LATEST TELEGRAMS.
[FROM OUE OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] [The following telegram ought to have been received by us for publication in our last, it having been handed into the office at Wellington at 4.4J p.m. on the 3rd instant : — ] Wellington, June 3. At a large meeting held yesterday of the Mail Service Committee, the following resolution was unanimously passed : — "That, in the opinion of the Committee, the explanations afforded by the Hon. the Postmaster-General to the deputation which, waited on him on the 30th nltimo are exceedingly unsatisfactory ; that a scheme having a line of ocean steamers, calling first at Auckland and then visiting other Southern ports, the Manakau being connected with Australia by a branch, line, is impracticable j and that, in the event of such a scheme as the one denned in the first resolution passed at the public meeting obtaining the support of the Victorian Government, this committee will feel bound to use its influence to secure for that scheme any subsidy which this colony can grant in such service." It also passed a vote of thanks to Mr Pearce for sending telegrams to the papers, correcting the false impression conveyed by the Government telegram of the result of the interview with the deputation. Mr Yogel wrote a letter maintaining the correctness of his telegram, which caused considerable amusement. Hokitika. June 6. The s.s. "Waipara had a narrow escape from capsizing to-day, while crossing the bar to tender the Tararua. The sea was very rough. While in the break, she turned round, being unable to reach the steamer, when she was struck by a heavy sea, which smashed her bulwarks, and she returned to port with difficulty. Nelson, June 6.
