A butcher in Auckland has been fined L 5 for exposing for sale meat of "an unwholesome tendency." He pleaded that the meat in question was "preserved mutton from Hawke's Bay ;" but the defence proved unavailing. The captains of whaling vessels at the Bay of Islands, Auckland Province, having offered a reward of L 4 per head for the recovery of runaways, the Maoris there, aided by their dogs, have gone actively into the business of man-catch-ing. They are said to show but little discrimination as to the persons they seize, all Pakehas |at a distance from the settlements being apparently runaways in thoir opinion.
