Westport, May 9. Captain Deuchrass, of the schooner Mary Ann Every, which has just arrived, reports having seen a steamer under sail apparently broken down, ten miles S.S.W. off Rocks Point, on Saturday afternoon at five o'clock, steering northwards, believed to be the Charles Edward. 5 p.m. Captain Deuchrass says he is certain the steamer he saw was the Charles Edward, as he was becalmed from 7 a.m. to 5 p. m. close to her. She had either broken down or was short of coal, but made no signals. He distinctly saw Captain Holmes on the bridge. Dunedin, May 9. A father and son named Lawson have been drowned while crossing the Upper Taieri River. The Cromwell Quartz Company have crushed 2500z for a week's work. The Escort brought down 6700.
