ENGAGEMENT AT OPOTIKI.
19 OF THE ENEMY KILLED, AND 300 TAKEN PRISONERS. Wellington, April 5, 5 p.m. A private meeting was held yesterday, at which it was resolved to form a new Steamship Company, and purchase the plant of tho New Zealand Steam Navigation Company. The Government has received a despatch from Opotiki, which contains the following news : — On the 25th March, Major Ropata attacked Meretai pah, and captured it after some hours' engagement. Owing to the slight resistance, Ropata does not think Te Kooti was present. The garrison abandoned the pah after an hour's fighting, the prisoners falling into the hands of Major Kemp, who was marching down, after taking prisouers all of the Whakatoes up the river. The total number killed on the enemy's Bide was 19 ; prisoners taken, over 300. No loss reported by Ropata. Te Kooti escaped with 20 followers, his track was towards Wainmnawa ; but he must have doubled back, as the following party reached Te Ronga and found the Wieweras had all deserted him. Rakuraku and others also got off. Hakaria killed. Whole force and prisoners expected at Opitika on Ist April.
