BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual weekly meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Town Hr.ll last evening. Present : J. Kilgour, Esq., mayor, in the chair, Councillors Parkinson, Purcell, Coates, Strike, Moore, Nichol, Kennedy, and Wickes. The minutes of the lust meeting were read and confirmed. A letter was read from the manager of the West Coast Times, stating that the Borough Council of Greymouth was not on the free list of that journal, and that the local agent had been charged with all the copies supplied. — Referred to the Finance Committee. The Clerk to the Bench wrote enclosing L 2, the amount of tines inflicted during the month under the Corporations Act. — Received. A number of the residents in Albert street wrote drawing attention to the deplorable condition of Albert street, where pools of stagnant water caused much sickness in families — Referred to the Town Surveyor, to report as to the cost of repairing the street. The Town Surveyok reported that there were 2400 ft of sawn timber (rails) lying east of Tainui street, in the bush. He estimated the value of them at 4s 6d per 100 ft, in all L 5 Bs. A division took place as to the advisability of taking up this branch of the tramway, or leaving it alone in the meantime,' when, it appeared that an understanding had previously been made with regard to the removal of these rails with Perotti and Co. Further consideration of the matter was postponed. The report of the Public Works Committee recommended that L 3 per pile be paid to M'Gregor and Campbell for the eitra piles driven in the new wharf ; that in consequence of a portion of the steps being carried away during the last fresh, they recommended that L2O be voted as an addition to the contract for repairing the old wharf, on condition that the steps were piaced inside, and a shoot supplied for loading cargo-boats. They had also offered the contract for repairing the old wharf to Seabrook and Co. on six months' bills, which they refused. The contract was then ottered on the same terms, and at the same price, to M'Gregor and Campbell, and they were willing to accept it. The Committee recommended that the contract be accepted. Mr Moore asked if the Bank Manager was agreeable to the arrangement ? The Town Clerk replied that the Manager would not object, as this was a work of necessity to prevent a much larger expenditure. Besides, he had been able to keep the terms of the agreement with the Bank respecting the overdraft. The report was received and adopted. Mr Nichol moved the adjournment of the Council for a month, as there was really nothing for them to do, and the Mayor could call them together whenever it became necessary. This was opposed, and a discussion took place, which resulted in the Council •adjourning until the usual time, next Friday.
