GYMPIE.

[GYMWE TIMiES, FEB. 12.] The crushing of 313 tons of qnartz from JJo; 1 south, Smithfiekt, at the Victoria machine, yielded 10970z 12dwt llgr of smelted gold. It appears that wo did not give the holders of this fine claim sufficient credit for the employment of labor,

are over thirty men engaged. upon the ground. One notable feature in mining during the present year has been the large number of patches whiclv have been found. Scarcely a week has passed without one or two being reported. It is now our pleasing duty to chronicle the finding of another large patch in. No. 5 north. Caledonian and Lady Majy (amalgamated), a part of which wasjexhibijipd in the window of the Joint Stock Bank,- and which is estimated to contain^ about, >1 00 ounces of gold. The holders of this j clami (Little and party) are stoping out I from a7O feet level. , A remarkable circumstance in connection with the working of this claim is that the best gold has been got between the walls of solid bluestone, one piece ef quartz, about two inches square, taken from the lowest level, contains- about. 10 ounces of gold. A nice patch of about 12 ounces was taken from the 15 feet level on Monday afternoon.. Our reporter was shown between 2 and 3 cwt. of splendid stone, the gold in some instances forming a kind of clasp to hold the stone together. There are about 100 tons of stone, in the paddock which the : party intend to crush next week, arid which is expected to yield well. After the crushing' it is proposed to sink a new shaft considerably to the westward of the present one, to a depth, of 200 feet. The Hope machine has finished the first crushing that has taken place in the Kilkiyau district, viz., 20 tons of stone from the Black Snake prospectors' claim, which has yielded 2060z 15dwt of retorted gold. The machine appears to have given tho claimholders satisfaction. The Mariners' prospectors have just finished a small crushing of eight tons— from the show on the tables, it is believed the yield will be very remunerative. Victoria and Golden Currie Company : Prospecting has been vigorously carried, on in this company's ground ; shafts have been sunk and prospects tried in almost every direction, and gold has been found in nearly every instance. The following : reefs have been found to pass through their ground, viz. :— The Victoria, Golden Currie, George Hood, and JJoltonV :A. new leader has also been found, running parallel to the Victoria and Golden .Currie Reefs, which has not yet been named. The company are now engaged working a new shaft considerably to the (.westward. of their original workings;'.. SPhe manager, Mr Henry Davies, anticipates that at a certain depth aIT the reefs will form into one large and payable body of i stone. To strike this, the manager expects the shaft will.have to be sunk to a depth of 600 ft. Sinking is still being proceeded with ; the shaft is down 138 ft, the work at this depth being very easy, and the shaft free from water. The directors intend to drive at 150 ft, but, should the present easy: sinking, continue, the manager will advise them to sink to a further depth before doing so. New Zealand : This line still maintains its position as one of the best paying reefs on Gympie. It has been traced as far' as No. 7 north, and claims on the northern side are looking well. Prospect claim : Black and party have three shafts at work on their claim. The southern shaft is down 12Cft ; it ■ will be' sunk to a depth of 140 feet before driving : in the middle shaft the party are Stoping out from a 75ft level. The northern \ shaft is down . 102 f t; it will be sunk to the'same;depth.as the: southern one before driving. The reef all through averages 2ft in width ; there are about 100 tons of stone on . grass, which looks equal to the last. : . K-o. 1 north is registered, pending the settlement of some dispute amongst the shareholders. The owners of No. 2 north are crushing. No's.- 3 • and. 4 north .(amalgamated) : : M'Mah and party have two shafts at work ; in No. 1 shaft they have sunk on the reef to a depth .of. 35ft, at :v?hich. depth the reef averages 14in in width ; very good stone is being raised. In No. 2. shaft driving is going on a level of 25 and 3sft respectively. -The .stpne" in both drives looks first-rate ; there are about 18 tons of stone in the paddock. No. 5 north : The party in this claim are driving^ east: on a 40ft level ; "the presejiit iridiea^ tions lead the shareholders to believe that they will get the reef very soon. No. 6 north : Harvey and- party are driving eastward on a 50ft level ; the drive is in 27ft They are hopefuf of striking the reef! shortly. The owners of No. 8 north have got the reef in their old shaft, in a dri^e to. the eastward ; they are now sinking -a- -new shaft, which, is down, 12ft, . and expect to get the reef at 40ft. No. 1 south is registered for six months. In No.j'2 south. the party are driving at a leve.l of 102 ft. In Nos. 3 and 4 (amalgamated) Hayes and- party- have sunk a T shaft to a depth of 118 ft, and are driving east on a 114 ft level : the drive is in 7 ft. '• The present indications are good, the i stone being very soft, and the party are expecting to strike the reef every day. The owners of No. 5 south are driving on a 50ft level, and are also in hopes of coming on the reef shortly. Nos. 6 and 7 south' : Hamilton and party are. driving r on a. 610 ft level. No. 4 sonth,'~T7nknown,- Stewart and party. The present prosp3cts of . this claim' are .very good. Our reporter visited .it yesterday, and';,' was shown some very rich; specimens which have been 'recently obtained. -The shaft is down 70ft, but the party a,re driving north and . south on a 35ft leverl ■•j'/.-ijKe leader at this, depth is six • in.chea, wide, tne stone : looking well. There are 15 tons of stone in the paddock, which will be crushed shortly, after;which: the stone from their 70ft level will be , tried.
