j The governor of the Melbourne Gaol has lately made several complaints to the police of the prisoners having obtained tobacco from without in some manner, and about six o'clock on Wednesday morning, 23rd Feb., aaConstableFlannery was watching the exterior of the gaol, he managed to capture one man in the act of attempting to throw tobacco over the walls. When first discovered there were two of them in company, each having a small bundle in his hand, bat no sooner did they see the policeman than they made oJ£ They were followed, but Flannery could only overtake one of them, named Thomas Jones, who was not secured without considerable difficulty, as he commenced kicking in a very violent manner. The two bundles were found to contain 76 plugs of tobacco, some of them done up in small parcels addressed to the different prisoners for whom they were intended, and attached was found a paper with the following division of the spoil : — "Tommy Robinson, 20 figs, from Bob ; Brocky Hockey, 3 figs, from Bob ; Handy Andy, 3 tigs, from James Jack Meehan, 3 figs from James ; Bill Popham, 3 figs, from James ; Charley Brewer, 6 figs, from Frank j Ballarut Jack, 3 figs, from Frauk ; Bob Gardiner, 14. figs, from Spoak; O'Regan, 12 figs, from Kelly ; O'Leary and Charles Butherford, 6 figs, from Larry. There is none of this from Billy. I will send you aome more as soon as I make some^ more money." As the constable said he knew the other man, Mr Call ordered a warrant to be issued for his arrest, and at the request of the prisoner agreed to remand the case until the following day to give him time to instruct his solicitor.
