WESTLAND RIFLES' COMPETITION.
The picked shots of the Westland Volun- . teer Rifle Corps met at the Hokitika range on Saturday morning to contest for the honour of representing the County at the shooting for the colonial prizes, which takes place at Dunedin. It is pleasing to have to record that the result placed the three Greymouth men at the head of the list. The regulations required that forty points must be made in order to entitle a competitor to proceed to Dunedin ; but Colonel Harrington, on his last visit of inspection, stated that, in consequence of tke new rifles having just been issued, the three highest scorers would go, whether or not they made the required average, so that it is probable Messrs Hardy, Smith, and Moss will have the option of shooting for the colonial prizes; whether they will go or not remahis with themselves. Our representatives at once accepted the challenge, and fired off the match on the spot, the result showing that they were quite able to sustain the reputation they had previously acquired, winning by 28 points.
