BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Theusual weekly meeting of theßorough Council was held in the Town Hall last evening. Present— The Mayor (in the • chair), Councillors Wickes, Nichol, Strike, Moore, Purcell, and Parkinson. The minutes of last meeti ng were read and. confirmed. The minutes of the.Finance Committee, "held upon Saturday, 26th ult., were also" read and confirmed. The copy of a letter to Mr Lapham, and also a letter to Mr Gilbert King, were read, the latter containing a statement of the liabilities of the Borough as asked for by him. ■ The Mayor stated that he had arranged with Mr Lapham for an overdraft of one thousand pounds. A letter from Robert Dudley was read and received, asking for liberty to build upon a section in the Tidal Greek. It was moved that it be considered at next meeting and carried. Three applications for dangerous goods licenses were received and granted. A. letter from Mr Hardwick, secretary to the Oddfellows and Foresters fete was received, stating that the proceeds of the fete were to be devoted to charitable purposes. It was moved by Mr JSTicholl, and seconded by Mr Strika, "That this Council as a body decline to take part in the procession, but, through the Town Clerk, to wish them every success in the fete. • An application was received from Mr E. Masters for a right to cnt and cultivate flax from the bridge along the banks of the lagoon. Discussion upon this ensued, when Mr Mooke moved, "That the matter be considered this day week, and in the meantime the Town Clerk wait upon Mr. Masters and ask him to define the area of land applied for by him. Seconded by Mr Strike and carried. Mr Parkinson brought forward the petition from the ratepayers in Albert street, of. which notice of motion had been formerly given. ' The Mayor strongly opposed any deviation froto the promise made to Mr Lapham that no new works be commenced, and he considered this as one. Mr Nichol abo opposed it. ' Mr Wickes spoke strongly against the immediate departure from the promise made to the Bank Manager, and moved as an amendment, "That the petition be held over by the Council, and complied with as soon as the finances will allow." Seconded by Mr Strike, and carried. The report from the Town Surveyor was read, stating that Weinacke and Co. had finished their contract for filling in the scrub, and recommending the removal of the rails from the streets. ' Moved by Mr Moore, that the report be received and acted , upon, and that the sleepers be sold as they lie. Seconded, by Mr Niqhol, and carried. The valuation report and return of the Borough Assessor was laid before the Council, amounting to date to L 28,730. It was moved by Mr Strike — That this be received and adopted. Seconded by Mr Wickes, and carried. The Mayor arranged that a revision of the above, shall take place next Friday. * MrWiOKES moved that a rate of Is in the pound be the charge upon the assessment. . ; SecondetJby Mr Strike, and carried. Mr Nichol asked for leave of absence for two weeks for Mr Kennedy, who was indisposed. Granted. The Town Surveyor was instructed to bring up a report at next meeting about the condition of .the steps opposite Tainui street. An adjournment took place at half -past nine o'clock,
