BOROUGH COUNCIL.

+ The usual weekly meet ing of the Borough Council was held in the Town Hall last evening. Present—The Mayor (in the chair), Councillors Wickes, Nichol, Strike, Moore, Purcell, and Parkinson. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The Town Clevk read the copy of a telegram to the Colonial Secretary, socking information about his message to the County Council respecting the withdrawal of the town lands from the Borough together with the answer received thereto from Mr Gisborne. The Town Clerk also read a letter from the Curator of Intestate Estates respecting an account due by the Borough to the late Thomas Trist. Mr Strike moved, and Mr Wickes seconded, "That they be received as rend." — Carried. The Mayor stated the purport of his personal interview with the Colonial Secretary respecting these lands,, and stated, in answer to Mr Moore, that all proceeds arising therefrom would have to be paid into the Warden's Court, and thence to the County Council before being received by the Borough. A letter was read from Major and party, South Beach, complaining of the excessive valuation put upon their water-race and ftuming. --Referred to the Town Valuator, to report at nest meeting. Leave was given to Mr De Costa to erect a verandah in front of his shop. J. M'Gre^or and Co. wrote, asking for a payment of L 450 on account, as they had completed six chains of the wharf. — Referred to the Finance Committee. The Town Clerk read a most interesting report upon the trade of Greymouth for the year 1839 and its prospects for the future. Moved by Mr Strike, and seconded by Mr Wiokes, — " That the thanks of the Council are due to Mr Andrews for his elaborate report." — Carried. The report of tire Finance Committee was read and received. A memorial from inhabitants of Albert street, praying that some gravel should be put upon the upper end of that street, was received. • Mr Whall, Town Clerk, reported that the Council had received L 750 from the County Chairman, which had been paid to the credit of the Borough. An estimate of monies required, and of available assets aud revenue, was laid upon the table in answer to a motion by Mr Parkinson. The Committee appointed at last sitting to report upon McCarthy and Co's drain, stated that the matter had been satisfactorily arranged The Mayor, before adjourning the Council, begged to inform them that in consequence of the onerous duties at present imposed upon Mr Johnstone, clerical assistance to collect rates had been rendered compulsory. Mr Parkinson moved, and Mr Strike seconded, "That the Mayor's action be approved of." — Carried. Two notices of motion were laid upon the table, after which the Council adjourned.
