The elections are proceeding. The Re* publicans gain in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The Democrats succeeded in New Jersey and Maryland. 1 Andrew Johnson, ex President, was de* feated in Tennessee by one vote ; Cooper, Democrat, was elected. Negociations to reduce the postage be« tween England and America are in progress, A tidal wave caused serious devastation in Canada and the United States. Since the war ended the National debt has been reduced two million sterling. The present- taxation would extinguish it in fourteen years. The Government declare the debt must be paid honestly in coin. Speculators raised the price of gold to 160, and caused immense excitement in Wall street. The Government ruined the scheme by sending 4,000,000 dollars into the market, and gold fell to 135, and the speculators lost 13,500,000 dollars. Gold is now 126 f. Numerous failures resulted from the gold mania, Corban, President Grant's bmther-in-law, 'was implicated in the plot. The President was unjustly charged with complicity. Chinese labor for the South is assuming gigantic proportions. The steamer Stonewall was burned on the Mississippi River, and two hundred passengers perished. Pexe Hyacinthe is visiting the States. Prince Arthur proposes making a two months' tour through the States. The Cuban insurrection is languishing ; wealthy planters support the Government, The Duke of Edinburgh visited Pekin, and received no public reception or recognition, London, Nov. 19. The Emperor Napoleon: has been suffer^ ing from rheumatic pains, but has recovered. The Suez Canal was opened on the 17th, Nov., in presence of a yreat gathering of illustrious vjsitord. Vessels yon veyed 'the
Empress of the French, the Emperor of Austria, Dutch and Prussian Princes from Porte Said tolsmailia in eight hours. Grand fetes were held, and public banquets given to Mr Lesseps. Numerous vessels have traversed the Canal. A meeting of the European Assurance Company's shareholders adopted the committees report, recommending the resignation of the present directors and manager.
