THE Grey River Argus. THUESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1869.

Lately there was gome interference with the ground of the Moonlight Quartz Mining Company, and an attempt made to secure one half of it for another company. This must have been entirely unsuccessful as the Acting-manager yesterday received from Nelson a grant of a special olaim for the whole original area held by them. The shareholders in Christcburch have consented to the proposition to double the capital of the Company for the purpeg; of pa cjiasing ad» dUional machinery— but it is not to be ordered until after the first crushing at the claim. An extraordinary general meeting of the shareholders of the Grey Rjver Tug Company, will be held to-day at Kilg'iur'a Union Hotel, at four o'clock. The business is the, very agreeable duty of considering the acU visibility of declaring a dividend. The charge of bigamy against Air Braithwaite of Westport, which, vrqs heard oji Monday, at Nefccn, hrdke don j, au<\ a verdict of " Not Guilty" was returned. As usual a good house greeted Thatch' r last night, Daniels in his "Death of Nelson" created a perfect furore, of applause. The inimitable Small diversified his usual programme, and was, heartily applauded. Thatcher's new local upon the Reuhabites evoked laughter enough to satisfy the most vain improvisatore, and altogether the entertainment was a great success, The bill of fare promised to-night is a treat, aud those who partake of it will experience sufficient laughter to cause good digestion. The. first sitting of a Bench of Justice?, under the Amended Public-house Ordinance, lor hearing applications for renewals of publicans' licenses, took place at the Resident Magistrate's Cqurt on Tuesday morning. W. H. ..Rexell, Esq., R.M. presided, and there wero als/> present, E. S, La;>ham and W. H. Harrison, Ksqs ,J P. Patrick FJanuary's application was granted until the Ist July. Mary Buggy applied for a renewal of her license for the Hotel, and was informed that her husband's name must be inserted in tb.c apjlkatiop, and further con-

sideration was adjourned to Thuisday. Charles H. Rhodes applied for a renewal of license for the Oddfellows' Hotel, but it transpired that the license had \toeu transferred to Mr Bulstrode, and the application should have been made in that name. Adjonmed to Thursday for that purpose, J. P. Thomas applied for a license for the Ballavat and Bendigo Hotel, Johnston street. Mr Sub-inspector James objected because the house was very dirty, and not fit for a hotel in its present condition ; besides, the applicant was not a fit person to hold a license. When this house was formerly licensed, it was the resort of bail char;vcters, and he had reason to believe that it would be so again. The application was adjourned 1 for further consideration niitil Thursday. The following applicants not being present, their applications were also adjourned until Thursday :— Daniel M'Kinty and Mrs M'Kinty, Robert Keown, Frederick Clark, John Mullcr, Henry Hunt, Harry Hope, — Anseline, Margaret Ogden, aud Joseph Leathwood. We are informed by a notice posted up at the Telegraph Office that the line affording internal communication throughout' Otago has been transferred from the Provincial to the General Govenuneut charge. Cromwell, Lawrence, Queenstown, &c, are tl-us now brought in under the same scale of charges and regulations at present in force throughout the rest of the Colony. A very merry afternoon was spent on Tuesday by a number of miners on the South Beach, who have been engaged for some time back bringing in a tunnel from the beach to the terrace behind Mr Chesterman's Half- ] way House. Campbell and party and Kerr and party, who were conjointly bringing in the tunnel, having struck payable gold, the former iuvite.il tha latter, along with a number of other friends, to make merry and enjoy themselves at the christening of their olaim. The interesting ceremony was gone through, and the honor of breaking the bottle of champagne at the claim was entrusted to Mrs James Jones, of Oreynioutli, who named it " The Sons of Freedom." After a number of toasts and good wishes expressed for the success of " The Sons of Freedom, :> the company dispersed, highly pleased with their entertainment. The opening fete of tho season at Tivoli Gardens took place on Tuesday night, and extended far into Wednesday morning, dancing being kept up with spirit. The display of fireworks was rather late, but this delay was unavoidable and not intentional. The owners of this place have labored hard during the past year to make the gardens a most agreeable place of resort, aud they will succeed in doing so. if they continue to keep the company as respectable as possible. It has been objected that a license should not be granted to these gardens, but in justice this cannot be thought of, so long as dance-houses, in connection with hotels, are licensed in the front street of the Borough. The most exciting and best match that has as yet been played on the Camp Reserve was cinnnenced yesterday betweeu the eleven which represented the Grey River Cricket Club in the late match played at Hokitika and eleven all-comers. The first innings of eich side has been concluded, and resulted in a tie. Subjoined we give the scores : — HOKITIKA ELEVEN. There is so much of this description of ground to be met with on the coast that it is a necessity for miners to make use of every help they can get, in order to enable them not only to put large quantities through, but to put it through also to the best advantage. This the brazed hose, pipe f a)\y does. It has three sixes fitted to it, whereby if the miner h«u plenty of water he can use the whole that it will throw, and again, should his water be scarce, by shifting the nozzle t > a smaller size, he still seoures the necessary force that would be otherwise wasted, were he only to have the larger sizod mouthpieoe to work with. It is only lately, that a real brazed pipe could be ma le here—the casting having been made by Mr Noy. We also learn that our tinsmiths here are the first to maku them on the coast, and miners who are engage 1 in ground sluicing should call at the shop of Messrs Favwig and Brockley, and hear the principle fully explained. Indentation made upon the braz.ed pipe con more easily be beateu out by a stone, &<?., than can a crack made, in zinc or tin, aud digger 3 should, therefore, in all cases, when practicable, choose one of the former material. The difference in price is not material, ancl the wear and tear preventable is bo very much the greater, '.They can be made tv throw from half-aminch up to four inches of water, and the strength of the copper material used is such as to prevent tho slightest probabi'ity of bursting.
