THE SOUTH BEACH.
(fbom our own correspondent.) November 3. The miners on the South Beach will long bear in remembrance the great downfill of rain which took place last Thursday and Friday, and well have they a cause, as it has been the means of putting a stop to the work of three large companies — the All Nations, the Homeward Bound, and the Unicorn. It will be remembered that the tunnel which is taken in from the beach supplies the place of a tail-race. This was timbered and lathed the whole length, and belonged to the All Nations. The Homeward Bound had a brauch race from this main one, and the Unicorn have been taking another branch one from the main one for the. last three months, and it was expected they would have completed it in the course of a fortnight, and no doubt they would have done so had it riot been for this unfortunate flood, which poured through the main race, and so materially has it damaged it that the men have all been compelled to desist from work. In some five or six places the aoil has run down from the top, leaving large holes on the surface. The damage has. been so considerable that it will prevent the men from carrying on their ordinary work for some weeks, and when it is remembered that there are no less than thirty-two men who will thus suffer the loss that will accrue thereby will iudeed prove very considerable. The miners and business men } far and near, greatly sympathise with these men, and indeed they deserve it, for- it was through their perseverance and industry that the continuation of the lead wa&.picked ujx It is to be hoped that the damage will not prove so serious as it seems to be, and tha* the men may soon be able to follow their usual work.
