(From the West Coast Times.) Wellington, June 1. The General Assembly was opened today, in the absence of the Governor, by a commission consisting of the Hons. Dr Pollen, Major Richmond, and Major Richardson. The policy announced in the Viceregal speech is the permanent settlement of Native disturbances with a highly organised colonial force. No Imperial troops are to be employed, but the Imperial guarantee to a loan is to be obtained. Thanks were warmly accorded to Col. Whitmore, and officers and men of the Colonial forces. Bills are promised to be brought forward, providing summary means of dealing with persons taken in arms against the Queen. Imperial assistance with troops is hopeless. The Estimates for the coming year have been reduced, excepting as regards tjie Defence Department. Readjustment of representation is promised. Dunedin, June 1. A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce held on Saturday" to discuss postal arrangements, was adjourned till Thursday. Miss Forde is singing at the Princess Theatre, with. great success.
