REPORTED REFUSAL OF MAORI KING TO MEET THE PRINCE. ATTACK UPON OPOTIKI REPULSED. COLONEL WHITMORE RETURNED TO AUCKLAND SICK. FIRE AT HAVELOCK. (from o^r own correspondent.) Wellington, Monday. The Southern Gross, of the 27th May, says that a letter lias been sent by a number of influential settlers +o the Governor, urging the expediency of Prince Alfred visiting the King Natives in the Waikato. The Governor replied that in consequence of the intended visit the Prince's stay would probably be prolonged for ten days. Private information received states that the King declines to meet the Prince. He says it is no use seeing a young man who is roaming o\er the world without any business. Despatches have been received atNapier from Major Herrick at Waikare-Mona Lake. He says the forces had arrived there without opposition. The enemy's tires were seen at Tika-Tika, on the other lake. Reports state that Te Warn attacked Opotiki with 300 men ; but the settlers were prepared and on their guard, so that no harm was done. Colonel Whitmore has arrived at Auckland, sick. Mr Kelly's motion for a change in the form of Government of Taranaki was strongly opposed, and withdrawn without coming to a vote. A fire occurred at Havelock on Thursday last. The Masonic Hotel and Miller's premises were destroyed.
