COUNTY COUNCIL.

Friday, Feb. 6. (Condensed from the W. C. Timei.) Mr Harbison brought up a report from thq Public Works Committee on a road from Greymoutli to the Eight-mile. The report was read and received. Jjitr Lahman asked—" What amount of money had been received by the Treasurer accruing from the sale of land in the town of Greymouth, and why the Greyiuouth Corporation has not received their share of tho proceeds of land sold." The Chairman said that there was the sum of L 459 lying in the bank waiting until decisions had been arrived at as to the manner in which it was to be expended. In reply to Mr Lahman, the Chairman stated that the balance to the credit of the County to the 31st of January was L 9345 16s. Mr Lahman moved— " That the sum of L4OO be placed on the Estimates, in order to erect a common gaol at Greymouth." Mr Harrison seconded the motion, and after some opposition it was carried. The Council, in Committee, fixed the scale of tolls to be charged at the Kawhaka toll-gate on the overland road, as follows : — On each vehicle drawn by one horse, ass, or head of cattle, 4s ; on each additional horse, ass, mule, 6r head of cattle, Is; on each horse or mule ridden, 3s ; on horses or mules driven, with or without packs, each, 2s 6d ; on cattle or asses, each, 3s ; .on sheep, pigs, or goats, each, 6d ; on every passenger per mail coach, ss. Mr Rees moved — " That it is advisable to change the system of alienating the waste lands of the Crown in Westland in such a manner as to render the settlement of the said lands more popular, and that the said subject be referred to a committee, consisting of Mr Bonar, Mr Carreras, Mr Barff, and the mover ; said committee 'to report on Wednesday, the 10th instant. The previous question was moved by Mr Harrison, and carried on the voices.
