Madrid, December 16. The following is official : — The country is entirely trauquil. Addresses, which the Government issued for heads of departments in Provinces on the necessity for the restoration of order, have therefore been withheld. London, December 16. Eeverdy Johnson, replying to a letter of London working men, justifies his friendly intercourse with Mr Laird and others, by the. example of Grant and Sherman towards rebel officers. If he was guiliy of treason, so are Grant and Sherman. He says Grant has entertained distinguished Confederate leaders. He ascribed the attack on him to a secret dislike for peace. The Telegraph says the anti-repudiation resolution in the American House of Representatives leaves the greenback payment question still open.
It is understood that the Victorian Ministry are not working amicably together, Mr M'Culloch and Mr Jones are said to be at loggerheads.
