THE GREENSTONE ROAD

(To the Editor of the Orey River Argus.) Sir,— l fear that the citizens of Greymouth are too much in the habit of forgetting that excellent adage, "Heaven helps those who help themselves." Something else is required'to develop the trade and resources of the place besides merely proclaiming the superiority of our bar, or the various other advantages we possess. A, glaring example of blindness to the'r i own > interests and supinenesa on the part of our business people ia shown at the present, time by their want of action with regard to tho Greenstone diggings. How is it that, although our distance from these diggings and the difficulties of communication are so much less than from Hokitika, the latter place has managed to secure the entire trade ? Our natural advantages do not seem to avail us much against the superior energy of our Hokitika neighbors. One thing is certain, if the trade of the Greenstone diggings is to bo considered worth having, -we must shake off this apathy, and be up and doing. I do not think that in a place like this much difficulty would be fou.nd in raising the capital necessary to construct a line of tramway to the Greenstone. I a-n informed that the engineering difficulties are comparatively trilling. The tramway would run through and open up a country every mile of which is doubtless auriferous.

The subject is one of vital importance to the inhabitants of this town, and action in the matter should at once be taken by those interested. — 1 am, &c,
