Third Day.
The Christmas sports which were riot finished on Tuesday evening in consequence of the rain, were resumed on Wednesday afternoon. The day was the finest of the three in point of weather ; the attendance of the public was again large ; and the games were gone into with much spirit. The following are the results of the day's sporjt : — . Boy's Race, 100' yards, 7 entries — Ist prize, L 2, James Coy ; 2nd, 10s, Robert Parkinson. The lad Heaphy was jostled out of the first place, which he had every appearance of gaining, but the second prize was awarded to him. This concluded the annual Christmas Sports — the most successful which have yet been held in Greymouth. Notwithstanding the large crowd : of men wlio were congregated on the ground for the three days during which the sports lasted, nothing could be seen but the most orderly conduct, and in everything the greatest good feeling was displayed. The gentlemen who acted as stewards, and Messrs Middleton and Holder, who filled the onerous posts of secretary and treasurer, deserve the thanks of the community for the amount of time and tronble they spent and the anxiety they displayed to car se everything to pass off well, andintlis they were eminently successful. The prizes have all been paid over, and everyone appears satisfied with the result of 1 the meeting. We may add that as there was a dispute about the prize for wrestling, Mr Carroll, to whom it wasawarded, paid over half of the amount, L 6, to the Grey River Hospital. ; '
New Orleans and its vicinity have been full of rioting, burning and bloodshed recently. ; A row in 'the city one night, resulted in the death of six negroes and three whites. : . A new Polar expedition is fitting out at Bremen and another at Havre. From Paraguay we learn the Allied army had reached' Villettai where the Paraguayans . were concentrated. An American war steamer is said to have gone up the river to demand redress for the outrage's oh the American Legation perpetrated by Lopez. A tornado 'on the western coast of Mexico had ■driven ashore the ' English sh|p Cecilia, capsized thesc'hodner Pizarro, and siink the schooner Hayode. All on board the Pizarro, except the captain, were lost; and the Cecilia .. was totally wrecked. . The war steamer Juarez was also driven ashore, and slightly damaged.,. ;
