PAROA ROAD BOARD ELECTION.
The nomination of four members for the Paroa Road Boatffl, in accordance with the Couniy of Westland Act, 1868, took place at Barnhill's Shore, Paroa, at noon yesterday. There were only about 25 persons present. Mr Masters, Mayor of Greymouth, read his appointment as Returning Officer for the Paroa District Road Board, and stated that, in accordance with the County of Westland Act, 1868, and of which due notice had been given. He called upon electors to nominate candidates. The following nominations were then made : — Mr James Howieson, miner, proposed by G. Barklay and seconded by James Keeth. MrW. Leach, Paroa, proposed by D. Walker and seconded by James Inglis. Mr Thos. Oolton, miner, proposed by Michael Scanlan and seconded by H. Fleming. .Mr Hugh BalrnhtlLj Paroa, proposed by G. Davidson and seconded by M. Scanlan. l! Mr Robert Stansell, miner, proposed by Maurice O'Connor aud seconded by Robert Hopkins. Mr Michael Dowling, miner, proposed by Maurice O'Connor and seconded by H. Barnhill. Mr E. B. Fox, Maori Gully, proposed by M. Scanlan and seconded by G. Davidson. Mr John Henry Murdoch, Greenstone, proposed by H. Barnhill and seconded by M. O'Connor. A show of hands was taken in favor of the various candidates, with the following result .-—Messrs R. Stansell, 18 ; Wm. Leach, 18 ; James Howieson, 17 ; Thos. Colton, 13; J. C. Barnhill, 12; W. Dowling, 10 ; J. H. Murdoch, 6 ; E. B. Fox, 5. The Returning Officer declared the show of hands to be in favor of Messrs R. Stansell, W. Leach, Jas. Howieson, and Thos. Colton. ~ A poll was : demanded on behalf of Mr H. Barnhill. ' The Returning Officer intimated that the poll would take place on Thuraday, 10th December, at the advertised polling places. f;..
The rumor is current that the success of the revolution in Spam has induced France to make some important concessions to Italy. It is known that the Prime Minister Menabrea is expected in Paris, and the supposition is that he comes to conclude the negotiations rendered necessary by the alleged change in the policy of France.
