SALTWATER AND NEW RIVER DISTRICT.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) RuthergiiEN, September 3. The Eight-mile Terrace continues, to be the absorbing topic of the day, and those parties who at first withstood its allurements are daily being enticed away, leaving behind them all the necessary implements for mining purposes ; indeed, it is quite common to come across workings deserted, with cradles and boxes as used, by their late owners, The population there is being daily augmented ; between twenty and thirty men passed through this township yesterday en passant to the Eightmile. I omitted in my report last week, in speaking of business, that there were two bakers erecting ovens., and would be prepared to bake as soon as they could obtain flour. One of the greatest obstacles against the successful development of this part of the country, is the great difficulty in conveying provisions, which at thp present time have to be conveyed by canoes up the New River, as far as Card's Lower Store, from thence having to be packed to the Eight-mile. It is reported that a party attempted to pack from the beach on Monday, and unfortunately got one of his horses drowned, which was afterwards found near Cameron's, with the pack-saddle on. This, combined with the fact that goods cost £25 a ton for conveyance before they reach their destination, shows at once the importance of making a road immediately. On dit, it is reported that Messrs Card, Hamilton, and Barnett are likely to be candidates at the forthcoming election for the Road Board. No doubt as soon as the vacancies ajre filled up immediate action will be taken to open up this part of the country, which has been long neglected. Since commencing this communication, some parties have arrived from the Eight-mile, and report that Burke and Company have struck gold. The prospects I have not been able to learn. The Welshman's Terrace men brought down one of their friends last Monday, and conveyed him to the Hospital. It seems that he was taken very ill, and Dr Morrice, who was sent for, ordered him to be brought down. This, the men one and all volunteered to do, and kindly did they perform the heavy t^sk. The miners in this district fully appreciate the advantages of having a.v hospital in the neighborhood, and I have no doubt that if proper means were taken that they would willingly contribute their quota to uphold such a valuable institution.
