THE ARNOULD TRACK.
(To the Editor of the Grey River Argus.) Sib— l have been patiently waiting for an answer to the letter I wrote you on 27th July last, requesting some member of the Grey River Road Board to explain their reason for accepting the tender of Messrs Smith and Co. for the formation of the Arnould track, when I most clearly showed that my tender was by far the lowest. Perhaps they will in excuse say that my tender was not recommended by Mr Johnston, their engineer, but only those of Smith and Co. and Leslie and Mathewson. If so, why did they (the G.R.R.8.) not ask why I was omitted, and if there was any tangible reason why [, who was so much the lowest, should not liavo the contract, and if there was any reason, why not let me and the inhabitants into the secret? Mr Johnston makea a feeble excuse that I was nowhere to be seen, and that he and the Road Board were of the opinion that 1 had left the district. Now I beg leave to assert that not a day passed whilst Mr Johnston was up the country with Mr Rochfort, that I did not call at the Melbourne Hotel to enquire if he had returned ; and again, in all other places it is usual to post outßide the door of the Road Board office the various tenderers, with the name of the accepted one. Trusting (as the Grey River Road Board will not) that Mr Johnston, their engineer, will explain his reasons for. arriving at the decision he did in this matter, I am, &c, Alien M'Ka.t, Greymputh, August 5, 1868.
