GREY ROAD BOARD.

The usual weekly meeting of the board was held yesterday. Present, Messrs Fox (in the chair), Wickes, Leach, Barnhill, and Whall. The minutes of the last weekly meeting and the three emergency meetings held during the week were read, and also a number of letters and telegrams which had been received from Hokitika with regard to the extension of the tramway, and the resolutions passed at the last emergency meeting, and published in our last. The minutes were then confirmed. A letter was read from the Arahura Road Board stating their willingne- a to pay one-half of the subsidy at the rate lately paid by the Government for keeping a ferry on the Upper Teremakau, on condition that the Board paid the other half. Card Bros, wrote asking the Board to recommend the County Chairman to grant protection for a track which they proposed to make to Pile Creek from the New River, four miles in length, and they guaranteed to keep it in good repair for horse traffic on condition of b3ing authorised to levy tolls a3 per schedule annexed. Mr Leach and the Chairman supported the application. Mr Wiokes wished that the Board should have power to take over the track at any time on their paying Card Bros, a fair valuation for the work done. A clause to this effect was added to the motion, and agreed to. A letter was read from the late secretary of the Board, Mr F. Guinness, asking payment of the balance of his salary due — Ll2]os. [t was moved to pay the amount subject to its being found correct. An amendment was moved by Mr Wham, that the claim bo not entertained, as they had found that the late secretary had not kept the books as required. This was not seconded. Another amendment was moved by Mr Wickes, to the effect that Messrs Whtvll and Fox consult with Mr Guinnes3 and settle the matter. The resolution was carried. The Treasurer (Mr Wickes) said the balance standing to the credit of the Board at the Bank was now reduced to L211956d. Mr Fox said he 'wished to move that the Sub Committee Reserves the thanks of the Board for the t'emp'erato manner in which they conducted the latejproceedings against Mr Kilgour. Mr Whall did not think that would bs a wise course to pursue. They acted for the entire Board, by and with the advice of the Board and the Government, and they were only carrying out instructions given them. It would not stand well as a resolution. The motion was withdrawn. It was moved by Mr Leach and carried — "That in the event of any meeting of emergency being called, the ordinary business will not be proceeded with, but only the special case in point dealt with."
