THE PRICE OF MEAT.
(To the Editor of the Grey River Argus.) t Sir — Seeing a letter iv your issue of the 4th, signed. " Victim," concerning the price of meat, will you kindly allow me space for a few remarks to enlighten that individual. He says beef can be bought in Melbourne at l|d per pound, and wants to know if we cannot get some here. He may rest assured if there was not a pretty constant supply coming from Sydney, Melbourne, and other ports, that he would be a victim at Is 6d.- There appears to be one or two things that he has not taken into consideration. First, beef at the price he alludes to is of inferior quality, prime beef being worth 15s per 100 lbs wholesale in Melbourne at the present time ; then the cost of transit is as much as the beef ; then allow 25 per cent., at the lowest calculation, for deaths on the passage ; after which there is landing commission, on sale, and other little expenses ; and you will find their original figure greatly altered. Then there is the disadvantage the Grey butchers are under in having to go to Hokitika, at groat expense, to fetch those cattle, and often suiter great loss from drowning and other causes ; and I think you will agree with me that butchering on the Grey is not such a rosy game as it at first appears, In conclusion, allow me to express a hope that " Victim. will give his next subject a little more consideration before^ rushing into print.
