NELSON CREEK.

(from a correspondent.)

Since the date of my last letter to you the weather has been very wet, precluding mining to any extent. The several parties who are working within half a mile on either side of the township are doing very well, some of them having averaged Lls per week per man. Fresh arrivals on the terrace cannot but notice the great drunkenness which prevails, which fact is generally taken as an indication of general prosperity. One can have no qbj^ jection to men getting drunk withig"certain limits, but lam sorry to, say that ruffianism is co-existent therewith. . One would expect the publicans to close their respective hotels at the, , specified hours, and not, as is the case" here, keep their houses open on Sundays as well. Great complaints are bjeing continually made about it, and also at the stolid indifference uf the Government to the imperative wants of this important mining district. Every week disputes arise, and parties have to trudgfe away to that deserted village, the Twelve-Mile, to get matters set to rights by our worthy Warden. A fatal accidout occurred to a miner named M'Crae, last Tuesday. He was clearing a tail race at the upper township, when a slip of ground took place, causing instant death. I am sorry to say that similar cases have occurred here, and owing to the Warden or Coroner not feeling disposed to hold his Court at this place, the bodies have had to be conveyed a distance of 12 miles. The present one very likely will be no exception.
