THE PRICE OF MEAT.
(To the Editor of the Grey River Argus.) Sik — My attention has been directed to an article iv one of the Hokitika papers, copied from the Melbourne Age, in reference to the price of meat in Melbourne. It is thero stated that the price of the best beef, in small quantities, varies from 10s to 15s per cwt., or nearly lfd per lb ; mutton, Id per lb. Surely at these prices some enterprising individual might benefit himself, and the consumers of meat in this town, by introducing Australian meat into this market, and thereby bring down the present extortionate rate of 9d per lb to one more in accordance with the rate of wages, &c, and price at which meat is supplied to the wholesale dealer. Butchers' bills are a serious item in a poor man's expenditure ; and I feel assured that a little co-operation amongst consumers in this town would have the effect of breaking down the present monopoly amongst the butchers I trust, Mr Editor, that you will not let the matter rest here, bin will assist in giving the worthy gentlemen of the blue robe a dig under the "short ribs" now and then, byway of showing them that such a thing as public opinion still exists, lam, &c, A Victim at 9d. a ft.
