THE ELECTION FOR WESTLAND SOUTH.
(From Yesterday's West Coast Tvmes.) Our returns are- still incomplete, no information having yet been received from Okarita or Maori Gully. The following are the returns, as far as they are to hand, at the moment of going to press : — Button Bakff. 1 Hokifika - 6 10 ! Kanieri - - 37 20 ; Big Paddock - 8 15 Chesterfield - 13 8 Greymouth - 38 4 Stafford Town 35 93 ; Waimea - 8 83 Rutherglen - 1 4 ■ Maori Gully - — — Donoghue's - 35 11 t Ross - 140 45 Okarita - - — ' 321 293 1 Majority for Mr Button 28. It is evident the result of the contest ' depends entirely on the return from r Okarita. Mr Barff has a present majo- . rity to make head against. At the recent s election for members for the County Council thirty-eight votes were recorded 3 at Okarita. There were then two mem--3 bers to be elected. Probably twenty was - the utmost of the number of voters who , poled. It is impossible to say what exf ceptional excitement recent events may cave caused in that district. But with 3 the facts at present before us, the proba--5 bility is that Mr Button has heen re- • turned.
