GREY ROAD BOARD.
The B.oard mest at seygn o'slqck last evening in the long room at Kilgour's Hotel. All the members, were present, • except Mr Barnhill, and Mr }?. Quinn§ss L acted as hqn. sec. ': The minutes of the las.t meeting were < read and confirmed. ] A letter was read from the Clerk pf the \ protective worlds, Mr Johnston, estimating || the cost of repairing a portion of the < Arnold track, between Greyuiouth and i the Race Course, at Lll i The Chairman explained that the Race j Committee had offered the new bridge E they had erected over the Motoinoto Creek, on condition of the B,oay d repairing the track. Mr Whall thought that the Board had not power to : divert any pf .the money voted for the town to other pur-poses than to protective w.orks. Mr Whai,lj lasked the Chairman if any communipation had been received from the Government as to the amount of money likely to be available for the Board ? The Chairman said that no information had been received, and he -thought if highly necessary that an application should at once be made, and -also an enquiry if the Board could give the Race Committee power to levy a toll on the bridge a,t the Motoinoto Creek. • Mr Leach proposed, and Mr Wickes seconded, that Messrs Whall and Wickes be appointed a Sub-Committee to confer with the Town Protection Committee with regard to taking over the protective works. Carried. Mr Wickes thought, the. best plan would be for the inhabitants of the Government Township to subscribe the sum of Ll5O, so as to equalise their contribution to that of the residents of the Maori Township, so that the work could be continned on an equal footing. Mr Whall proposed, and Mr Leach, seconded, that the Secretary write to the. Chairman of the County Council for information as to the amount of money likely to be placed at the disposal of the Board. — Carried. Mr Whall also proposed that applica^ tion be made to the Goveanment for permission to levy tolls and wharf dues at the same rates as those charged at Hokitika. The Chairman was of opinion that it would be better for this Board to leave the question of raising tolls to the Municipal Council when formed, Mr Whall thought the Board had a perfect right do all that was necessary in raising a revenue ; they could hand the matter over to the Municipality when it was formed. Mr Wickes seconded the motion, which was put and carried. • . Mr Leach moved that application be made to the Chairman of the County Council for copies of plans of the survey of the Grey district. Carried. Mr Whall moved that the liarbor master be requested to issue instructions to prevent steivneiy plying on the' river Grey at fall speed. He stated that it was in a great measure due to the swell occasioned by the steam er% that the bank of the river was being washed away so rapidly at the lower end of the town. * Mr Wickes sscooded tiie resolution,' which was carried, and a copy" of it ordered to be forwarded to the Chairman of the Connty Council. Mr Wickes moved that the Secretary do communicate with Mr Kilgour, requesting him to inform the Grey Road Board whether he is prepared to carry out the promise of the former Tramway Company, to deliver metal at 2s 6d per cubic yard along the line, 1 and to keep, the Arney-street bridge and its approaches in .repair. Seconded by Mr Whall and carried. " Mr Whall laid on the table an application from Mr Groves, Hokitika, apply- , ing for the situation of surveyor and engi-' neer 'to the Board.'" He moved that the Secretary acknowledge the letter, and inform Mr Groves that the Board had no need of his services. Carried. A letter was read from the Secretary of the Race Stewards, asking. that the Board should grant protection to the bridge erected by them over theMotonioti Creek, and put a portion of the road in repairl Mr Whall moved that the Honorary Secretary be instructed to telegraph to the Chairman of the County Conncil, asking for permission to levy toll on the Motomoto Creek Bridge, during the races. —Mr Whall also moved that in the event of a favorable reply being received from Mr. Bonar, the Arnold track be repairedatonce,in accordance with Mr Johnston's letter. Carried. ■ Mr Whall moved that t;he Secretary make application to the trustees of the Mechanics' Institute, asking permission for the Board to hold its meetings in that building. In. the meantime Board could have the Fire Brigade Hall Carried. The Board adjourned until Thursday at 7 p.m.
