PSALMS VERSUS SAUSAGES.
(To the Editor of the Grey River Argus.' Sir— The interest with which Mr Barlow, during his sojourn amongst us, invested thai exceedingly useful piece of mechanical inveiv tion, the "sausage machine," no doubt has had the effect of greatly popularizing its performances, f.nl probably has most ma terially promoted the profitable trade oi which it is the medium; but Mr Barlow siams sc far to have endorsed the sentiment: of " the preacher" in regard to this matter, as to have taught us by example that there is a time for attending to sausages and a time for not attending to sausages ; anel I am inclined to believe, that a departure from this gentleman's theological view of the qiiestioii will be followeel by an amount of patronage far less than was bestowe:! upon him. There arc certain butchers, however, not one hundred miles at the rear of the Religious Institution Rooms, who are evidently ol opinion that the rational and legitimate use of the " sausage machine," does not stop at that point at which Mr Barlow would seem to limit it ; and by way of demonstrating the soundness of their doctrine, have solccteelthe rather inopportune time of half -past seven o'clock of a Sunday evening for illustrating their theoiy. V*< Now it seems to me to be extremely inconvenient and undesirable, just at the momeni when our divines tare demanding our attei.tlor to words very similar to the following :— "We propose to consider the object whicli was to be effected bj' the sacrifice of Isaac"— to have our minds distracted by the rattle, clatter, and click of a "sausage machine,' although it may be employed in the work oi sacrifice— perhaps in bringing to account the yelping, long-tailed noisy little whelps Avhicl: are now becoming too numerous in oui streets ; nevertheless the end to be accomplished scarcely seems to justify the means employed under the circumstances referred to. ft is possible, however, that this morning's "fry" may have revealed a better state ol things than I have been imagining, anel thai the polonies contained a better seasoning thai: puppies. I luipe I have said enough to effect whatever reforms arc necessary in regard to the " sausage machine. " I an., &c, D. E. F. 'Grey mouth, April 22.
