CiißisTGH;ußCir..-^-The Lyttdton (I'imc.^ of the l^th instant, reports : — Business during the past week has been very quiet, and the demand for merchandise, very ljmited, ' Dealers continue io purchase very sparingly, and only to' supply the wants of immediate consumption. The purchases for the winter seas.on dp riot appear tp'liave commenced as yet ; although the usual demand generally commences Jtt'this time. | The arnval of the Canute, on tlifi' 7th inst, with a very heavy cargo for this port, has added considerably to our already overstocked markets, and has not tended to improved the feeling in pur commercial circles. Wo are glad to see by late advices that some difficulty is experienced in fitting up the vessels lajd on for this port, as it indicates a cessation of shipments, and may eventually give time for our overchaiged stocks to relieve themselves. There .are but few articles requiring notice this week. Bulk East India pale ale is still scarce, and wanted. Bottled stput of iirst-class brands is getting scarce. Candies are dull. Some little inquiry has be.en mdc for cheese and English hams, principally for the West Coast. Sugars are quiet, but stocks are moderate, and the rates firm. Teas, good medium congous, are more inquired for. We have heard of no mare failures during the week, and hope we may have seen the end of them for some time to come. There is no change in discounts or exchanges. The money market is fairly easy.
