(Fox's) at a quarter to four o'clock. She took 46 passengers, which with 10 tons cargo were all discharged, without accident. Lay at Fox's all night, and.. left again on Tuesday morning at 8 'olclock with a "few passengers, arriving off the Grey at 11. ■ She took her departure again with a full complement of passengers and cargo for Fox's and the Buller yesterday afternoon. _ The p.s. Tasmanian Maid came into the river yesterday afternoon at 3 p.m., with hei flare jit -half-mast high, which created some 'curiosity among the usral loungers of the wharf to learn what disaster this ominous signal indicated. It "turned out to signify the presence of a dead body on board, brought here for interment. She' reports having left Hokitjka at 12.55 on the Oth inst, clearing tho bar at 1.15 p.m., and arriving at Fox's at 7 the same evening. On entering Woodpecker Bay the vessel was struck by a heavy sea abaft, which tore away the bulwarks to leeward and one of the boats of the davies. The boat was carried into the surf and found ashore next morning totally destroyed. She left Fox's at 10.15 a.m. on'the 10th, bringing 2()C0oz of gold for the Bank of New South Wales, . Hokitika. Captain Souter reports the following vessels at Fox's : — Ouehunga, Tiger, Pelorus, all on the beach ; Flying Squirrel and another craft in the offing. Tho John Mitchell wont on shore on Tuesday night in attempting to come out of Woodpecker Bay. We hare been requested to draw the attention of the Nekon Government to the necessity of fixing moorings at Woodpecker Bay, for the use of vessels during rough weather. A t present vessels are compelled either to run great risk in remaining at their anchors or have to put to sea. There is a suitable anchor now lying useless on Mawhena Quay, which we believe could be bought at a cheap rate ; and we think the Nelson authorities should npt hesitate to purchase it and lay it down for the use of the numerous fleet now frequenting Woodpecker Bay. The cutter Dart got safely off the" North Spit on Tuesday afternoon, by means of a line passed across the channel. Wo are glad to say she- has received- no damage, and is now loading again for Pakihi. The steamer Alhambra left Hokitika on Sunday with a valuable freight of gold dust and some fifty passengers. Tasmanian Maid- left Hokitika on Friday last, at 9.30 p.m., and Captain Sonter reports that during the late gale several vessels came to grief at Fox's. The schooner Onchunga, from Auckland, timber laden, was lying at anchor in a very dangerous position close to the break. She signalled to the Maid for assistance, but befpre any help could be rendered she snapped both anchors, and drifted broadside on amongst the breakers, which made a clear breach over her, and placed her crew in imminent jcor pard'y, But just as her destruction seemed inevitable, a lijcrht breeze, came off the land, and she was thus enabled to clear that part of tho beach, which is exceedingly rocky, and reach the entrance to Fox's lliver, where she was beached close to the town . The schooner Tiger and ketch Pelorns are also reported as on shore, and thq cutter Harry Bluff, that but the other day was released from difficulties, has again made a mess of it in Woodpecker Bay, where she lies nearly high and dry-
