Built to' the order of the Government, and with all the latest improvements, the Southland was originally, in expensive boat, but the decline of £ho. Province led the authorities to look upon her as an expensive luxury, which it ,\vould be advisable to forego, even at a sai r'.- --'-" fice, in exchange for uiueii needed rearlv cash. She was accordingly advertised "f r sale by tender" in nearly all the New Ze; - land papers, aud we are happy to say that the firm of Messrs Spence Brothers of this town was fortunate, enough to secure her at less than onejialf of the original, cost. The Southland, therefore wil} soon be amongst us. Captain Kirkpatnck, late mate of the Challenge (who brought that vessel from Mel-, bourne) having been dispatohed .to Trivercargill to take charge of : hen '•-; He is under orders to convey her to J)unedin. wliere she will be placed upon the slip- to .undergo a thorough overhaul, and that accomplished her departure for this port will be iinmeiliate. — West Coast Times.
