Djjath of a Woman by Drowning.. — An inquest was held at the Provincial Government Buildings, at three o'clock yesterday, before tlie Coroner,*Dr Squires, and a jury, on the body of Sarah Rowley, wife of John Rowley, who was fomui drowned in the Maitai River, yesterday morning. It appeared from the evidence adduced, that Mr Joseph Harley, at a little before five o'clock a.m., observed the deceased's b,xly lying about 200 yards below Colliugwood street bridge, on a shingle bed in the middle of the river. Mr Haivly immediately wa/lcd over io where the body was lying, and then, wit]} the assistance of the police,* it was taken out of the river. Dv yickerinan deposed to having examined the body, -which exr Jubiled the usual signs of death by drowning, and showed no external marks uf violence. Mrs M'Cabe, a neighbour of the deceased wqm;vn ? proved th|it she had palled at her house . at ten o'clock on tlie preceding night, and that she was then .Uecidedly the worse for liquor. During the examination it transpii-ecl that, on the jiight in question, none of the lamps throughout the city were lighted, and the juiy returned the following verdict : — " The deceased was found drowned in the Maitai • Biver, ncatf Collingwood street Bridge, and we believe that she walked into the river above the bridge, having, through the darkness, and the fact of the tamps not being lighted, mistaken the road, and we hereby call the attention of the authorities to tlie necessity for better regulations regarding the lighting of tlie •lamps." — Ibid. • Mysterious Disappearance. — A man named Thomas White has suddenly disappeared: from the neighborhood of Mount Parnassus Station, where he had for some timebeen wandering in a state of "delirium treuiens." It appeeirs that the deceased a short time ago received his discharge from the Cheviot Hills Station, at the SR'ne time beii>g paid the amount of the wages due to him. He at once made his way to an accommodation house on the bank of tlie Hurunni River, where he remained di'inking for some time, after which ho started for Mount Parnassus, where he arrived after swimming the Waiau, in which he lost his swag. He wandered about the run for sometime, during which he was repeatedly seen by the manager, who, observing what was the matter with him, set a watch for him, secured -him, and took him to the station, where Dr Ford administered a dpse of laudanum. He then gave him into the charge of one of the men, telling him to take care of him, but in a A 7 ery short time after this he disappeared, and has never been since seen. He is supposed to have attempted to re-cross the Waiau and been drowned in the attempt. White has been missing since Oct. 2— " Lyttelton Times."
