TRIAL OF THE MAUNGATAPU ' ; MURDERERS. ' ■'• (From tlie Canterbiiry Pajjers,) Nelson, Wednesday, 1.30- p.m, The trial of the, Maungatapu murderers commenced to-day. The case of IVlatlneu was taken first, and a true biU found. The prisoners pleaded not guiity, Burgess stating as giulty,_ bi;t pleading for the 3ake of form. A true bill was found against all four prisoner for, the murder of Battle. The trial is expected to last, several days. Burgess and Levy, who are both undefended by counsel, cross--examined the witnesses at grelat lengjth. Nothing new is yet elicited, " . Thursday, G. 30 p.m. i The Court resumed sittings at - nine a.m. to-day.- v , s Sullivan was in the witness box Irom a quarter-past nine till dusk.. ' Mr Pitt demurred to taking Ms -evidence, ho. haying pleaded guilty to another criminal indictment, The Judge, overruled the objection. ' \ ■Evidence materially the. sa.me as already given, About four.p..m. Burgess commenced to» (jross-examine Sullivan with much virulence, insinuating a participation "in the murders of Dob^ori and Battle, and several, robberies. .
